I'm logging sea time toward a USCG Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) license, also called a six-pack license.

How the days are counted

  • A day counts when I was underway for 4 hours or more on that calendar day.
  • Two sessions on the same day are added together.
  • An overnight passage is split at midnight, and each calendar day with 4 or more hours counts.

The OUPV requirements in 46 CFR 11.467 call for 360 days of experience, with 90 of them in the last 3 years. A near coastal OUPV also needs 90 days on ocean or near coastal waters. Sea time is one part of the application; the full checklist is on the National Maritime Center site.
