Heave-to, wing-on-wing, and a beam reach home

Conditions: W 5 to 13 knots, gusts to 22, cloudy, 60 to 70°F

Play video: Heave-to, wing-on-wing, and a beam reach home

We sailed west, upwind toward Buford Dam, for about 2 hours 15 minutes on the Catalina 270 Christina. Then we hove to and jibed out of the heave-to to turn for home.

On the way back we sailed wing-on-wing at about 5 knots toward Three Sisters Island, with no preventer rigged. That takes close attention to keep the wind on the correct side of the main. We jibed out of wing-on-wing and finished on a beam reach to the marina.

A small gaff-rigged wooden boat sailed with us for a while, circled us, and then took off.
