Man overboard drills off Little River Inlet

Conditions: SSE 7 to 10 knots, gusts to 14, 74 to 75°F, clear

On my last day with Myrtle Beach Sailing School, I sailed on the Beneteau Oceanis 390 Bohemian Blue with Captain Jason Cox as skipper and two other students as crew.

We motored out of Cricket Cove Marina along the Intracoastal Waterway and through Little River Inlet to the ocean. I was at the helm for part of the way out.

Once we were outside the inlet, the three of us took turns at man overboard drills under Jason’s guidance. The drills were a requirement of my ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising course. After them, we motored back to the marina, and that was the last thing I did before I left the school and headed home to Atlanta.

Wind, temperature, and sky are from the North Myrtle Beach airport weather station (KCRE).

Track

  • Upwind 11%
  • Reaching 28%
  • Downwind 10%
  • Under 1 knot 2%
  • Motoring 49%

Arrows show the direction of travel. Point of sail compares the boat's course with the wind measured at KCRE, so short stretches can be off when the wind on the water differs. Shoreline: USGS National Hydrography Dataset and U.S. Census Bureau.
